Isolation Wards

Hospital Isolation Wards

Specialist ventilated isolation wards use controlled air supply and extraction to create pressure differentials, directing airflow in a known and consistent direction. This helps prevent airborne pathogens and contaminants from spreading between adjacent spaces.

By maintaining a steady flow of air, these systems also help dilute any airborne contaminants released by the occupant or others entering the suite, enhancing overall protection.

Negative Pressure Ventilation

By maintaining a higher rate of air extraction compared to the air supply, we create a relative negative pressure within the patient’s bedroom. This prevents contaminated air from escaping into the surrounding areas of the ward and dilutes the airborne pathogens and contaminants.

Our well-designed negative pressure ventilation scheme ensures that protective isolation is maintained even when doors are opened between the lobby and corridor, or between the lobby and the patient bedroom.

Highly Clinical Environments

Patients with contagious diseases require a more highly clinical treatment environment and our modular isolation wards provide precisely that.

We provide a single dedicated air handling unit for each single en suite bedroom to achieve a negative pressurisation ventilation regime, with air HEPA-filtered on extract.

The wards include less absorbent and more hygienic finishes, such as sealed metal pan ceilings, designed to withstand significant decontamination regimes (e.g. vapourised hydrogen peroxide).

HBN Compliant Design

Our isolation ward design conforms to HBN04-01 Supplement 1, WHBN04-01 Supplement 2, HTM 03-01, World Healthcare Organisation recommendations and the UK Government guidelines.

Modular ICU and isolation rooms can be integrated into a hybrid ward design or created as standalone hospital units requiring nothing more than a power supply and a potable mains water supply to become operational.

The standalone ward design provides the required workspace for clinical staff, staff rest area, WC and change areas, and nurse base.

Isolation Ward Projects

Cardiff Hospital HCID Isolation Ward

ModuleCo built a negative pressure HCID isolation ward at Cardiff and Vale University Hospital. The ten bedroom facility was mounted on a podium and handed over only 8 weeks after the NHS Trust placed their order, demonstrating the speed and precision of off-site construction.

Norfolk and Norwich Hospital HCID Isolation Ward

ModuleCo built a negative pressure isolation ward at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. It is designed to treat patients with HCID diseases such as Ebola, SARS, MERS, Hantavirus, Avian Influenz, and COVID-19.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a negative pressure isolation ward and how does it work?

A negative pressure isolation ward is a specialised care environment for the most infectious patients that uses controlled airflows to prevent the spread of airborne pathogens between rooms. By maintaining a higher rate of air extraction than supply, negative pressure prevents contaminated air from escaping the patient’s room. Each of our isolation units features a dedicated air handling unit with HEPA-filtered extract to maintain negative pressurisation, even during door openings.

Are ModuleCo’s modular isolation wards compliant with NHS and international guidelines?

Yes. Our modular isolation wards are designed in full compliance with HBN 04-01 Supplement 1, WHBN 04-01 Supplement 2, HTM 03-01, and WHO recommendations. The designs include sealed finishes, negative pressure systems, and independent ventilation to meet the rigorous standards required for treating HCID and infectious disease patients.

How quickly can an isolation ward be delivered and installed?

Thanks to our ‘Factory-first’ off-site construction approach, isolation wards can be delivered at unprecedented speed. For example, a 10-bedroom HCID isolation ward for Cardiff and Vale University Hospital was built and handed over just 8 weeks after order.
