ModuleCo has successfully delivered a modular multi‑storey ward at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, working in close partnership with The Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust. The new facility provides over 2,000m² of high‑quality clinical space and has been designed to support modern inpatient care while increasing hospital capacity.

As a result, the development plays a key role in helping the Trust manage seasonal demand and improve patient flow across the site.

High‑Quality Modular Ward Design for Inpatient Care

Each floor of the modular ward accommodates 28 inpatient beds, arranged across a mix of four‑bed bays and single en‑suite rooms. This flexible layout supports patient privacy while maintaining efficient clinical oversight.

In addition, the facility includes clean and dirty utility areas, kitchen spaces, and dedicated staff rest areas. Together, these features support smooth day‑to‑day operations and improve the experience for both patients and staff.

"It’s really exciting; from a staff morale point of view, it’s really uplifted us."

Michelle Cole, the Divisional Director of Nursing

Accessibility and Compliance Built Into the Modular Ward

To ensure full accessibility throughout the building, the modular multi‑storey ward at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital incorporates two 33‑person bed lifts. These lifts allow the safe movement of patients, staff, and equipment between floors.

Importantly, the lift strategy also meets all fire safety and evacuation requirements, ensuring compliance with current healthcare regulations.

Fast‑Track Delivery Using Modular ‘Factory‑First’ Construction

ModuleCo delivered the new modular ward within an impressive 35‑week programme from order to handover. Using the company’s Factory‑First modular construction approach, approximately 90% of the building was completed offsite.

This approach significantly reduced disruption to ongoing hospital operations while improving build quality and programme certainty. As a result, the Trust was able to bring additional inpatient capacity online quickly and safely.

End‑to‑End Turnkey Healthcare Delivery by ModuleCo

For this project, ModuleCo provided a full turnkey solution. This included leading the design process, managing all enabling works, and delivering comprehensive project management from initial planning through to final handover.

By taking responsibility for the entire delivery process, ModuleCo ensured close coordination between stakeholders and a smooth transition into operational use.

Supporting NHS Capacity and Specialist Clinical Services

The modular multi‑storey ward at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital is now home to gastroenterology and surgical services and provides 56 additional inpatient beds. These new beds help alleviate winter pressures and improve resilience across the hospital.

Furthermore, the development forms part of the Trust’s wider urgent and emergency care improvement programme, enabling closer collaboration between surgical and rehabilitation teams.

Future‑Proofing the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital Estate

In addition to delivering new capacity, the project has released valuable space elsewhere on the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital site. This space will be repurposed into a new general medical ward.

Consequently, the Trust can continue to expand its clinical infrastructure and ensure patients receive the right care, at the right time, in the right environment.

"The opening of the wards marks an important step forward in our commitment to improving healthcare for our communities. These new wards not only expand our capacity ready for winter but also reflect our focus on creating environments that support high-quality patient recovery and wellbeing. We’re incredibly proud of the teams who have worked to bring this vision to life."

Clinically Led Modular Ward Design

The modular ward was designed in close collaboration with clinical teams. Enhanced staff bases, larger single rooms, and improved infection prevention and control measures were prioritised throughout the design.

As a result, the facility supports safer care delivery while enabling efficient clinical workflows.

Enhancing Patient and Staff Experience Through Design

Thoughtful design features include LED skylight ceiling tiles and large floor‑to‑ceiling windows, which maximise natural light and create a calmer environment. All patient rooms, including four‑bed bays, are generously sized to improve comfort and support recovery.

At the same time, the design benefits staff by providing a well‑organised, visually calm space that supports wellbeing and efficiency.

Stakeholder Collaboration Driving Successful Outcomes

Jonathan Brindley, Sales and Marketing Director at ModuleCo, said:

“It has been a pleasure working with the Trust to deliver this much-needed additional capacity.
In eight months we have been able to provide a facility built to the latest standards while minimising the disruption to ongoing hospital activities.
I want to thank everyone involved in the project, as it showcases the very best of what can be achieved when all stakeholders are brought together to deliver a common goal.”
