CT Units and PET-CT Units
Modular CT and PET-CT
CT and PET-CT units play a crucial role in diagnostic imaging services across both the NHS and private healthcare sectors. These specialised environments house advanced scanning equipment that produces detailed, real-time images of internal organs, soft tissues, and metabolic activity.
ModuleCo’s modular CT and PET-CT units can be delivered as standalone facilities or integrated into larger diagnostic imaging departments.

Clinical Use
CT (Computed Tomography) is widely used to diagnose a variety of conditions, including trauma, stroke, cancer, and vascular disease. PET-CT (Positron Emission Tomography combined with CT) adds a functional imaging component and is commonly used in oncology to assess the metabolic activity of tissues and organs.
Together, these technologies support accurate diagnosis, staging, and treatment planning by providing clinicians with fast, high-quality imaging while minimising patient discomfort.
CT and PET-CT Unit Design and Build
ModuleCo designs and builds CT and PET-CT facilities in accordance with Health Building Note 06-01 guidance. This encompasses careful zoning, radiation protection, infection control, and ergonomic workflow design to support clinical teams. Our factory first construction method enables fast-track delivery without compromising quality.
Rooms housing CT and PET-CT scanners incorporate appropriate shielding to protect staff and adjacent areas from radiation exposure. This typically includes lead-lined walls, doors, and observation windows, as well as shielding within floors and ceilings where necessary. The specific level of protection is determined through collaboration with a radiation protection advisor (RPA) as part of our design process, with all shielding installed during the off-site modular build phase.
We have extensive experience working with all major equipment suppliers and coordinate closely with clients to ensure that all service and spatial requirements are met. Our module floors are engineered to support the substantial static and dynamic loads associated with CT and PET-CT scanners.
Facilities can be delivered as single-module permanent solutions or integrated into larger imaging departments comprising MRI, X-ray, ultrasound, and support areas. Each project is tailored to the Trust’s clinical needs, estate constraints, and long-term strategy.
We have successfully delivered small, single-scanner CT and PET-CT units, as well as larger standalone integrated diagnostic centres and focused imaging centres that incorporate CT/PET-CT alongside other diagnostic and imaging specialities.
Go Modular, Not Mobile
Mobile CT and PET-CT units often do not meet the same standards as those designed and built for permanent use, resulting in a less optimal clinical environment and a less comfortable care experience for patients during what can be a challenging procedure.
Our smaller modular CT and PET-CT units provide a superior alternative to mobile units. They are available for temporary hire without compromising on quality or compliance with Health Building Notes (HBN).
CT Unit and Pet-CT Unit Projects
Southampton General Hospital
PET-CT Unit
ModuleCo constructed a modular PET-CT unit for University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust at Southampton General Hospital. The facility, spanning 168 m², was completed in just 13 weeks. In addition to the scanner room, the unit included staff rest areas, administration offices, and essential support spaces, creating a well-organised and practical working environment.

Derriford Hospital PET-CT Unit
ModuleCo delivered a modular PET-CT unit for Somerset NHS Foundation Trust at Derriford Hospital. The facility, covering 173 m², was completed in just 15 weeks. Its exterior featured a light colour scheme complemented by timber cladding and contrasting vinyl graphics, creating a modern and professional appearance that harmonises with the surrounding environment.

Frequently Asked Questions
CT (Computed Tomography) uses X-rays to create detailed cross-sectional images of the body, often used to diagnose trauma, stroke, or vascular conditions. PET-CT combines this anatomical detail with functional imaging from Positron Emission Tomography, making it especially valuable in oncology to assess metabolic activity in tissues and organs.
All ModuleCo CT and PET-CT units are designed in accordance with HBN 06-01 guidance and include comprehensive radiation shielding. This typically involves lead-lined walls, doors, observation windows, and shielding in ceilings and floors, with designs tailored in consultation with a Radiation Protection Advisor. All shielding is installed during the off-site build phase.
