ModuleCo has recently installed a twin operating theatre suite at Guy’s Hospital in Central London, in partnership with Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust.
Hospital sites can pose challenges when installing our healthcare facilities due to limited availability space on site, both in terms of providing adequate space for new developments and allowing a clear access route for modules that can be up to 18 meters long, 5 meters wide and more than 4 meters tall.
Guy’s Hospital provided our team with a more significant challenge. It is a central London site in a built-up residential area making difficult to manoeuvre large modules, with limiting conditions for when road closures can take place owed to its SE1 postcode. The site itself is very narrow at approximately 19 meters wide with two multi-storey buildings looking down on it from either side. The site was so tight that at points to crane’s position was a mere 4 inches from the King’s College London New Hunt’s House building when lifting modules that weighed more than 21 tonnes.
Our project and site team took the installation in stride, completing all 14 lifts despite also battling high winds and snow. Now the project continues with internal fit out progressing and commissioning to take place.
These are the third and fourth of ten operating theatres that ModuleCo are installing at hospital sites across the country over six weeks through February and March 2023, two having already been installed at Leicester General Hospital.

ModuleCo have installed a twin operating theatre suite at Leicester General Hospital in partnership with University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.
We have been employed by the Trust to provide the twin theatre facility to expand the hospital’s surgical capacity. The building has been designed for two theatres, but one of the operating theatre suites will be temporarily used as a recovery and discharge area, allowing the facility to operate as a standalone unit whilst the existing Brandon Unit refurbishment works take place.
These are two of ten operating theatres that ModuleCo are installing at hospital sites across the country over six weeks through February and March 2023.

In March 2020, the UK was on the cusp of the first national lockdown and the Four Nations Public Health HCID Group had made an interim recommendation to classify COVID-19 as a High Consequence Infectious Disease (HCID).
As London Hospitals were quickly becoming overwhelmed by admissions of COVID-19 patients, Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH) had been designated as one of a number of “surge centres” to accommodate patients who required critical care. At the time, Negative Pressure Isolation Facilities were incredibly rare in the UK with only 15 beds across 4 hospitals.
These unique facilities are primarily designed to treat patients with HCID diseases such as Ebola, SARS, MERS, Hantavirus, and Avian Influenza. With the spread of COVID-19 accelerating, NNUH were looking to get working facilities in place in just 8 weeks which in their own words, “simply didn’t seem possible”.
The challenge presented to ModuleCo, together with the nationwide situation, was daunting. We had just 8 weeks to design, build and deliver a Negative Pressure Isolation Facility capable of accommodating HCID patients, on a site not ready to be built upon, in the middle of a pandemic which was rapidly sweeping the country.
With every day critical to meeting the agreed timescales, our designs had to be ‘right first time’ and this required clear and accurate communication across our respective project teams as well as fast-paced decision making and sign off by the Trust.
From agreeing the design to the first modules arriving on site took just 41 days and during this time preparatory works had to be completed on site to ensure module installation could proceed seamlessly as planned.
With 90% of the work completed in our factory, once on site, the Trust only needed to provide power, potable water and medical gas services, vastly reducing the impact to the estate and allowing for rapid connections to be made. A week of final connections and commissioning took place before the facility was handed over to the Trust for occupation during week 8 of the programme.
Under normal circumstances, the complexity of HCID facilities represent a unique challenge, the location potentially rendered the project unachievable and the circumstances presented by the pandemic were unpredictable at best.
The standalone Isolation Ward offers 10 single occupancy, en-suite rooms alongside ancillary support spaces for the clinical and nursing staff.
Designed to meet the specifications for HCID units, each patient room is supported by its own independent ventilation plant and safe change HEPA filter extract unit.
Each room has its own dedicated AHU providing a minimum of 10 air changes per hour and is coupled with a negative pressure regime that is protected by a ventilated entrance lobby.
In each lobby the dedicated supply/extract is mechanically interlocked to ensure there is no risk of a positive pressure regime arising should there be an AHU failure.
Adding more complexity to the project was the simultaneous delivery of an almost identical facility for Cardiff and Vale Hospital, who moved quickly to create additional specialist healthcare provision due to the pandemic.
Although the Trust had identified the merits of a ‘Negative Pressure Isolation Facility’ long before the pandemic, like NNUH they recognised the risk that many hospitals could be overwhelmed by COVID patients and took the decision to procure a specialist facility to alleviate the anticipated pressures.
With the decision made, there was still much work to do. Cardiff and Vale Hospital has been developed in such a way over the years that there was only one available location for a new facility – directly above the main entrance to the hospital, on a podium.
The combination of the location, urgent timescale and practical issues of working safely during the first lockdown, presented a truly unique challenge. We were asked to design, build and deliver this technically complex, specialist facility in just 8 weeks with no disruption to the busy day-to-day activities of the hospital whilst doing the same for NNUH.
By the end of May 2020, only 8 weeks after order, we had successfully delivered another Negative Pressure Isolation Facility, attached to a High Dependency Unit, situated above the Main Entrance of the Hospital, capable of safely caring for HCID patients.
By overlapping the two projects, we had more than doubled the UK’s HCID capacity from 15 to 35 beds in only 10 weeks. Thanks to our unique off-site construction approach, we were able to achieve this incredible feat with minimal disruption to both sites.

Swansea Bay University Health Board have partnered with ModuleCo to deliver a new ophthalmic operating theatre suite at Singleton Hospital, helping the Health Board with its ambition for the Hospital to become a centre of excellence for ophthalmology.
The new modular operating theatre marks a key milestone in the Health Board’s ambitious programme called ‘Changing for the Future’, which will promote health services being delivered in an improved and more efficient way.
Set to open in the summer this year, the new theatre will allow the Health Board to carry out around an additional 200 operations every month. Like other areas of Wales, Swansea Bay had extended waiting times for ophthalmology before COVID-19 and the situation has worsened during the pandemic, prompting the need to expand their specialist surgical capacity.
Jan Worthing, Singleton Hospital Director, said: “The reduction in theatre capacity as a result of COVID severely impacted all surgical specialties, but particularly ophthalmology due to the high numbers of patients affected.”
They have approximately 2,500 patients waiting for eye surgery, with around 1,700 of these having waited longer than the 36-week target.
“In addition, there are about 2,100 cataract patients waiting more than 26 weeks to be seen as an outpatient, and around 80 per cent of these are likely to need surgery.”
The Health Board has invested significant recovery funding to support their patients by having surgery at private hospitals.
Their focus now though is to develop additional NHS facilities to reduce the requirement for outsourcing going forward.
The new modular ophthalmic operating theatre will be attached to the existing Day Surgery Unit on the Singleton Hospital site.
It has been designed to facilitate a mobile floor mounted microscope and provides the typical theatre suite accommodation required for ophthalmic day surgery, including:
- Anaesthetic Room
- Layup Preparation Room
- Dirty Utility
- IPS/UPS
ModuleCo is also providing additional staff and patient supporting accommodation, including an office, store room and WC.
The facility’s construction is already well underway at our factory and will be installed on site in March already up to 90% complete.

In April 2021, a significant water leak occurred on the east wing of Doncaster Royal Infirmary, causing significant damage the electrical infrastructure and therefore forcing the relocation of some paediatric and maternity services. Extensive repair works continue within the Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
Working with ModuleCo and Integrated Health Partnerships (IHP), the Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust took the decision to increase the hospital’s Operating Theatre and Ward capacity.
ModuleCo manufactured a UCV Operating Theatre and three bed Recovery facility, including a 208m2 Operating Theatre and Recovery Suite, and a total of twenty-four beds in a Children’s Ward and Observational Unit with dedicated treatment and assessment rooms.
On Friday 10th December, the state-of-the-art healthcare facility was officially opened in a ribbon cutting ceremony.
Speaking about the expansion, Richard Parker OBE: “I am absolutely delighted that we have been able to open these new facilities – and share my deepest thanks with those colleagues and partners who managed this project so adeptly and to such a tight schedule. Since the water leak occurred earlier this year, we have had to make space within the hospital for some of our displaced services, such as paediatrics, which, given the activity driven by COVID-19, has made things challenging. With this new block we will be able to transition services back within the footprint of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, co-locating expertise once again, ensuring we have the relevant specialities and their staff all in one place.
“Crucially, this area is built to last and will help to increase our overall bed capacity throughout the challenging winter months, and, once our paediatric services are moved back to their original wards once repairs are complete in the main Women’s and Children’s Hospital block, this extension will be used for other inpatient services, while the theatre accommodation is one of the finest, if not the best, suite within the Trust, and will benefit patients for years to come.“
Dr Kirsty Edmondson Jones, Strategic Director of Estates and Facilities at DBTH, said: “This project has been a huge undertaking and the speed at which it has been achieved, from our initial conversations to seeing this facility constructed and operational, has been nothing short of breath taking.

On Wednesday 29th September, HRH visited The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital Birmingham to open the award-winning theatre and ward facilities recently provided by ModuleCo in partnership with ModuleCo Healthcare.
HRH is the Patron of The Royal College of Occupational Therapists, taking the time to speak with clinical staff about innovative models of care at the hospital, including robotic-assisted surgery and a trial of day case knee replacements by Consultant Surgeon Akash Sharma.
HRH also helped plant a tree in the hospital’s new Platinum Jubilee Orchard, planted as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy, a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022.
Jo Williams, Chief Executive at ROH, said: “It’s a tremendous honour to welcome Her Royal Highness to our hospital. I’m so proud of our team and the life-changing care they give to patients every day. It’s a fantastic opportunity to celebrate everything that makes us so special.”
Professor Philip Begg, Executive Director of Strategy & Delivery and the executive sponsor of the project, added: “We have built facilities which provide an exceptional environment for patients and clinical teams. It was a great honour to show Her Royal Highness these facilities and some of the innovative services we offer here at ROH.”

ModuleCo have completed a specialist respiratory unit for the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust to assist with their ongoing response to COVID-19 and provide permanent ward capacity at their Lincoln County Hospital site.
The ten-bed specialist respiratory ward has been designed to provide the optimum environment to aid and expedite patient rehabilitation from acute respiratory issues; as well as providing a state-of-the-art work setting for the staff. The facility was designed to significantly reduce noise within the bedrooms, eliminate vibrations at the bed position and provide a consistent temperature, efficiently, all year-round.
The unit has been designed with 11 single bed rooms, all equipped with high-tech video and monitoring equipment. It means the Trust will be able to provide patients with non-invasive ventilation and other specialist respiratory treatments.
United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust Chief Executive, Andrew Morgan, said: “This unit is all side rooms, reducing the need for staff to enter unnecessarily, meaning they will help us to control the spread of infection. This will not only really help us when treating patients during the COVID-19 pandemic but will also provide a fantastic facility to deliver a modern, high quality respiratory service for the future.”
For the more critically ill patients, a dedicated 4 bedroom negative pressure isolation suite was provided within the facility offering an acute clinical space. The negative pressure isolation suite conforms to HBN04-01 Supplement 1, WHO recommendations and UK Government guidelines making it one of the only, dedicated, Negative Pressure Isolation suites in the region.
Donna Gibbins, Matron at United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “We have been working hard for a long time to improve our respiratory service and the opening of this new specialist unit will transform the care we can provide to the patients of Lincolnshire. Bringing this to reality is a real honour for everyone involved.”
The unit will also be home to the Captain Sir Tom Moore Pleural Procedure room, which will treat both inpatients and outpatients from across the county who have diseases of the lining of the lung.
90% of the facility’s construction took place off-site in ModuleCo’s specialist manufacturing facility in Gloucestershire. It was installed at the Lincoln County Hospital site in 72-hours, minimising the disruption to the active hospital estate.
The facility was provided order to handover, in just seven months. Allowing treatment of patients to begin far quicker than if other more traditional methods of construction had been employed.
Professor Jonathan Van-Tam, the Deputy Chief Medical Officer for England, officially opened the facility. He noted: “Thank you for the terrific honour to come back to Lincoln County Hospital to open the specialist respiratory unit, as this is something very close to my heart because of the pandemic and also because I have asthma. It is fantastic to see this happening, with this high-tech and cutting-edge facility which will very much put you on the map.”
The Trust were able to focus on developing patient care plans whilst ModuleCo undertook the project works. Allowing more time than typically seen on such schemes for the Trust to focus on the well-being and recovery of their patients within the new ward.

ModuleCo has recently provided a state-of-the-art eye unit extension for the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust at their Musgrove Park Hospital site.
Historically the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust has had greater demand for ophthalmic surgeries that they had the capacity to meet. Their eye unit is the busiest department at Musgrove Park Hospital, carrying out over 3,000 operations every year and providing nearly 50,000 outpatient appointments.
This development is a key part of ‘Musgrove 2030’ – an ambitious programme to transform the hospital’s facilities and help make sure patients are cared for in the right place to meet their health needs.
The state-of-the-art theatre suite is the first part in the development of a new eye care unit at the hospital, with a fifth theatre expected to be in operation at the suite in early autumn. It has created additional operating theatre space, more recovery space and dedicated patient areas which help them feel comfortable when receiving care.
Matthew Bryant, chief operating officer at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust (hospital services), said: “The new ophthalmic theatre suite is a very important part of our recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It’s the first time we’ve had a permanent dedicated day surgery theatre for eye surgery in Taunton and we are pleased to be able to offer patients a more positive experience in a better environment.
“The additional capacity created by the new ophthalmic theatre suite, along with the hub for macular and glaucoma care introduced this year at Chard Hospital, will also help to reduce waiting times.”
To maximise the space and provide all the accommodation needed, the ModuleCo design team developed a bespoke Day Surgery facility design consisting of multiple modules of varying sizes, making up a 484m2 total footprint.
A ceiling mounted microscope and laser equipment had to be factored into the design to create the specialist Ophthalmic Operating Theatre. The theatre is supported by an integral scrub, lay-up prep, anaesthetic room, dirty utility, 15-patient day ward and multiple consultation rooms for to speak confidentially to, and examine, patients before their operation.
The suite was constructed off site as a modular build, with nearly 90% of the construction process taking place in ModuleCo’s factory facility, and was lifted into place over a weekend with minimal disruption to the active hospital site.
Sales and Marketing Director for ModuleCo and project sponsor, Jonathan Brindley, said:

“The feedback from the surgical team when using the facility is excellent and I know they have been very keen to use the new theatre suite since we first started discussions last December.
“It is pleasing to see that we have been able to deliver upon what was originally promised in terms of timescales, quality and the permanent feel and performance of the final build.”
The Trust hope that the additional capacity and forming of a dedicated Ophthalmology Centre will help reduce waiting times for routine treatment for the people of Somerset and also marks a very important step in the Trust’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.

ModuleCo are installing a state-of-the-art Gynaecological Operating Theatre Suite for the North Bristol NHS Trust providing expanded maternity services at Southmead Hospital.
The new modular facility will become part of the Southmead Maternity Services Department as dedicated gynaecological operating theatres.
Southmead Hospital’s Maternity Services Department provides a full range of maternity care and more than 6,000 babies are born at the Hospital every year.
Juliette Hughes, Divisional Director of Nursing for Women and Children’s Health at North Bristol NHS Trust, said: “We are incredibly pleased with how closely we have been able to work with ModuleCo on this project, allowing us to design the facilities exactly as we need them. This lets us provide the best possible care to women needing routine or emergency gynaecology treatment at Southmead Hospital.
“These state-of-the-art new facilities have also allowed us to upgrade all of our theatres across Women and Children’s Health in line with other theatres in the hospital.”
A detailed design was developed by ModuleCo’s experienced in-house design team, consisting of thirteen modules which make up a 8,211ft2 total footprint. The facility consists of two Operating Theatres with specialist equipment for gynaecological poceedures, supported by integral scrubs, lay-up preparation rooms, anaesthetic rooms, dirty utility rooms, a 5-bed first stage recovery, offices, and various supporting and staff rest areas.
Twenty-percent of the building’s power will be generated by solar panels, demonstrating the Trust’s commitment to sustainability, an agenda set forth by NHS England mandating Trusts to work towards delivering a ‘Net-Zero National Health Service’.
ModuleCo’s team completed the factory assembly phase and all modules have now been installed on site. Completing 90% of the construction and fit out in the factory provides a more sustainable approach to construction and has also been vital in helping the Trust minimise disruption to their active hospital estate.

The importance of our employees has never been more apparent during the past year. We have been fortunate to not lose a single day of business during the pandemic, thanks largely to the stalwart commitment of our team.
Recognising the critical role our employees play in our business came long before the recent challenges brought by the pandemic. ‘People – Our Greatest Asset’ is one of our company’s core values and we strive live up to it by doing our best to look after our own, be it through workplace health and safety or our employee welfare scheme. We want the best for our people.
We believe it is important to acknowledge when someone goes above and beyond. This is straightforward enough in the workplace but what do we do when an individual does something extra-special outside of the environment we are accustomed to seeing them?
This is what came to mind when Mike Sandon, one of ModuleCo’s experienced site mangers, mentioned that he and some friends were training to take on the 100km Lake District Challenge – a continuous day and night walk in aid of Cancer Research UK.
“Don’t let the word ‘walk’ fool you, though” Mike told me. “That’s 60 miles of walking along trails, day and night, whatever the weather, with the only respite being a brief stop to replenish our water bottles at stations located every 25km. We are taking on the equivalent of 2 & 1/2 marathons with no rest or sleep, taking 24 – 30 hours to complete, with only the promise of a beer at the finish line to keep our feet moving when tiredness sets in. We are trying to raise £7,000 between us so we needed to do something big.”
Their challenge is called “The Kendal to Kendal Loop“, walking a 100km anticlockwise loop and 2,500m climb starting and finishing in Kendal, taking on tough hills, Garburn Pass, Ambleside, Lake Windermere, forests, and nature reserves – with some stunning views en route – before a hero’s welcome and celebration back at Base Camp.
They have been training hard and finding time to fundraise with the help of friends and family, all of whom have been doing an incredible job. I am pleased to say that as things currently stand, Mike and his friends have already raised £6,000 towards their target with time still in hand before embarking on their ultra challenge on Saturday 12th June.
It is important that we not only recognise when one of our team does something special like this for the good of others but support them as well. So that is precisely what we are doing. Their challenge is called “The Kendal to Kendal Loop”, walking a 100km anticlockwise loop and 2,500m climb starting and finishing in Kendal, taking on tough hills, Garburn Pass, Ambleside, Lake Windermere, forests, and nature reserves – with some stunning views en route – before a heroes welcome and celebration back at Base Camp.

Somerset NHS Foundation Trust continues partnership with leading modular healthcare specialist ModuleCo with the development of a new state-of-the-art, modular Ophthalmology Centre.
ModuleCo are just weeks from installing a state-of-the-art Ophthalmic Operating Theatre Suite for the Somerset NHS Foundation Trust providing improved ophthalmology services for patients at their Musgrove Park Hospital site.
The new modular facility will be one part of a standalone Ophthalmology Theatre Suite with dedicated ophthalmic operating theatres and linking to the rear of the existing Day Surgery Centre. The eye unit is the Hospital’s busiest department, carrying out over 2,000 operations every year and providing nearly 50,000 outpatient appointments.
This development provides the Trust with additional operating space, recovery space and dedicated patient areas allowing them to feel more comfortable when receiving care. Patients will be able to access the centre directly from the car park, without the need to pass through the main hospital. The Trust hope that the additional capacity and forming of a dedicated Ophthalmology Centre will help reduce waiting times for routine treatment.
Mr Pradeep Madhavan, orthopaedic consultant at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, said: “This new unit will be a modern facility that will allow ophthalmic patients to continue with their surgical treatment safely and in time without being unduly affected by conditions in the rest of the hospital and community.
“The project is moving at pace and is a tribute to the team spirit within the department of ophthalmology and expertise and leadership in various parts of our NHS trust.”
A bespoke design has been developed, consisting of multiple modules of varying sizes to maximise the available site space, making up a 484m2 footprint. The facility will be the first part of a specialist Ophthalmic Theatre with ceiling mounted microscope and laser equipment. This is supported by an integral scrub, lay-up prep, anaesthetic room, dirty utility, 15-patient day ward, consultation rooms, and various ancillary and staff areas.
ModuleCo’s team are now in the midst of the factory assembly phase, and by completing 80% of the construction and fit-out in the factory this minimises the disruption to the hospital estate. In just a matter of weeks this cutting-edge facility will be being installed on site.

ModuleCo are now just weeks away from installing an isolation ward for the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust to assist with their ongoing response to COVID-19 and provide long term, permanent ward capacity at their Lincoln County Hospital site.
ModuleCo’s innovative design consists of multiple, repeatable, modules making up the 520m2 footprint. The standalone isolation ward offers 11 single occupancy, en-suite rooms, alongside ancillary support spaces for the clinical and nursing staff including: staff rest area; male and female staff changes; dedicated ward pantry; staff WC; clean and dirty utility; nurse base/reception area and electrical plant rooms.
The development provides the Trust with HBN04-01 compliant rooms for potentially infectious patients in acute settings. This specialist capacity supports the needs of the local communities and also offers the Trust further dedicated bedrooms which will be used to treat the most critically ill patients throughout the coronavirus pandemic and beyond.
With every day critical to meeting the agreed timescales for the Trust, ModuleCo’s designs had to be ‘right first time’ and this required clear and accurate communication across our respective project teams as well as fast-paced decision making and sign off from the Trust. We are now in the midst of factory assembly and in just a matter of weeks this vital facility will be on site.
